THE SANTA MARIA BASILICA: This is the oldest church in the city, dating back to the 14th century. Has a non-cruciform nave with side chapels between the buttresses.
Its baroque façade is crowned by two asymmetrical towers-one built in the 14th century and the other in the 18th century. Inside it boasts an 18th century rococo main altar and the Bautismo, Immaculada and Communion chapels.
PROVINCIAL COUNCIL BUILDING: The building houses the Provincial Council of Alicante. Projected by architect Juan Vidal Ramos in 1928 it was inaugurated three years later. He chose to design a generic palace of Italian influence, filtered by the baroque influence of the Bourbon palace in Madrid.
LAS CIGARRERAS CULTURAL CENTRE: The popular tobacco factory was established at the beginning of the 19th century and is an outstanding example of the area’s architectural urban heritage. As a prime source of employment for thousands of workers over two centuries, it forms part of the collective memory for several generations of Alicante citizens. When tobacco production was transferred to the surrounding suburbs, the old factory was taken over by the town council.
The restoration project for three of the factory ware houses, where Las Cigarreras Cultural Centre is currently housed, has transformed this place into a prominent Spanish cultural venue.
SAINT AUGUSTINE CANONICAL NUNS CONVENT: A rectangular floors building of great dimensions. The decoration, vegetal elementals and rococo design stone chipping is centred by the two shields without a coat of-arm over the vertical axis and in the sides where the union between the portico and the wall is fulfilled. The main doorway is in the southern façade, on the Nuns Street. The building is ended up with a powerful cornice. Over the top of it a double ribs dome stands rising over an octagonal shaped tambour.
CASTLE OF SAN FERNANDO: Was built, in the context of the War of Independence (Napoleonic war), in the side of Tossal Hill overlooking the city. Its layout is irregular due to adaptation to the hill’s topography. The Castle’s main doorway is made up by two pylons crowned by lions carved in stone, possibly not corresponding to the original works.
